Not really established in India until the 1840’s because of previous coffee rust infestations and the more profitable Tea Industry, plantations gradually started to spread and the southern areas of Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu became the favoured coffee growing regions.
Arabica, Robusta and a hybrid Liberica/Arabica coffee bean are the root stock of choice producing aromatic, mellow and flavour-full cups with a slightly sweet tone and without the higher acidity of other varieties.
In 2014 India exported around 1,38,000 tonnes down 16% on the previous year. Estimates for the 2015 season though are expected to be in the region of 3,44,750 tonnes.
